WE ARE GOING TO COURT OVER IYAYI'S DEATH-Falana

Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), yesterday, vowed to pursue the circumstances surrounding the death of the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Professor Festus Iyayi in court.
He disclosed this while addressing journalists over Iyayi's death. Iyayi died in a road accident on Okene -Lokoja Road when the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada rammed into his car.
He was on his way to Kano for a National Executive Council meeting of ASUU when the accident occurred.
Falana, who noted that the death of the late don is a "personal loss," said the leadership of ASUU and the family of the deceased have given him the mandated to pursue the matter in court.
According to him, the case will serve as a deterrent to other road users who are in the habit of harassing other road users through reckless driving and use of sirens.
He also stated that other political office holders should take a cue from Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Faashola who moves about without a siren despite his busy schedules and the chaotic situation of traffic in the city of Lagos.

KANO – The leadership of the Academic Staff Union
of Universities, ASUU, National Executive Council,
weekend, met in Kano. The secret meeting,Vanguard
gathered lasted from Friday night to Saturday
morning.
However, at the end of the meeting, lecturers were
not forthcoming with the outcome, which sources say
was borne out of the promise made to President
Goodluck Jonathan during his intervention by the
union to inform the president of their decision before
going public.
It was learnt that the NEC meeting which attracted
‘fair representation’ from over 50 universities was
held at Mambayya House. Vanguard gathered
lecturers were divided on the issue of suspension of
the over 5months strike.
The Universities lecturers were conveyed to the venue
of the secret meeting in two Coaster buses, secured
by the union’s Kano chapter, in order to avoid the
attention of the press and public.
A competent source close to ASUU told Vanguard in
Kano that “we still have 40 – 60 percent situations
here after the meeting; the resolution from the north
favours the call off while their peers from the South
strongly support the continuation of the strike”.
The source further revealed that “however , we were
able to take a middle course that would be pleasant to
Nigerians, but that will not be discussed now at the
public domain until we meet Mr. President in line
with our last discussion”.

A herb seller has been arrested by the Akwa Ibom State police over the theft of a seven-month old baby boy -Feargod Edemekong.The suspect, Ukat Aran, aka Dr. Job, was arrested in Afia Nsit Atai, Nsit Ibium Local Government Area of the state.The mother of the baby, Mrs. Mfreke Edemekong, said on Tuesday in Uyo that Aran came to sell some herbal medicines to her husband’s uncle, Mr. Effiong Akpan, a day before her child was stolen.Mfreke said, “Last Thursday, around 5am, a four-man gang broke into our house. One of them hit my husband, Ekong Edemekong, on the cheek with the b*tt of his gun.”She said two of the gang members entered their room, while one stood outside with a gun ready to fire. She added that the last member was the driver.She said the two members, who went inside the room, snatched Feargod, while pointing guns at herand her husband.“As the men took my child away, they also forced me to escort them to the car. It was then that I saw that the driver was the herb seller who had called atour house the previous day to sell herbs to Akpan.”Mfreke, who said her eight years marriage to Ekong had been blessed with two children -Godswill, 7; and the seven-month-old Feargod, explained that the abductors had accused her husband of selling hemp.She said the four abductors told them that they were police officers who came to arrest them for selling contraband items.She said, “We did not restrain them from searching our house. We told them that we are farmers; we do not sell hemps or know where such things are sold. Rather than search our house for verification of their claims, they snatched my baby. It was then that we realised that the men are child thieves. Theyonly used hemp issue as a cover story.“I insisted that they must not take my child away, but the assailants hit me with the b*tt of their guns and pushed me into the gutter.
